Ramzi Yousef

Ramzi Yousef (b. 1968) was involved in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.

Background

He comes from a Baluch Pakistani family, though grew up in Kuwait.[1] Yousef was studied electrical engineering in Wales, and learned advanced English.[1]

Aliases

Aliases used by Yousef include Ali Khan, which he used at the time of his arrest.[2] On the night of the 1993 bombing, Yousef travelled back to Pakistan using the name Abdul Basit Mahmud Abdul Karim.[2] In the Philippines, Yousef rented an apartment under the name Naji Haddad.[3]

Terrorist activities

Yousef was involved in:

  • Plot to assassinate Pakistani prime minister, Benazir Bhutto.[1]
  • Plot to kill Pope John Paul II in the Philippines in 1995.[3]
  • Bojinka plot
  • Planted a bomb on a Manila-Toyko flight, which exploded and killed one person; the flight was able to land in Okinawa.[3]

Arrest

Yousef was arrested on February 9, 1995 in a residential area of Islamabad in Pakistan.[2]
