1996
- November 2 - Hani Hanjour applied for and received a U.S. visa.[1]
1998
Mohamed Atta and some other hijackers/coordintors moved in together in Hamburg.[2]
1999
- April 3 - Nawaf al-Hazmi applied for and received a U.S. visa.[1]
- April 7 - Khalid al-Midhar applied for and received a U.S. visa.[1]
- November 25 - Ziad Jarrah travelled from Hamburg to Karachi, Pakistan.[1]
- November 29 - Mohamed Atta travelled from Hamburg to Karachi.[1]
- December 6 - Ramzi Binalshibh travelled from Hamburg to Karachi.[1]
2000
- January - Nawaf al-Hazmi and Khalid al-Midhar travel to the United States from Kuala Lampur. Satam al-Suqami and Abdulaziz al-Omari also spent time in Malaysia, as did Ramzi Binalshibh.[1]
- January - Marwan al-Shehhi receives a U.S. visa.[1]
- January 8 - Nawaf al-Hazmi and Khalid al-Midhar travel from Kuala Lampur to Bangkok, en-route to the United States.[1]
- January 15 - Nawaf al-Hazmi and Khalid al-Midhar travel from Bangkok to Los Angeles, where they stayed for approximately three weeks, and then went to live in San Diego.[1]
- February 23 - Marwan al-Shehhi travelled from Hamburg to Pakistan.[1]
- March 22 - Mohamed Atta contacted the Academy of Lakeland in Florida, via e-mail, inquiring about flight training:
- "Dear sir, we are a small group of young men from different Arab countries. Now we are living in Germany since a while for study purposes. We would like to start training for the career of airline professsional pilots. In this field we haven't yet any knowledge but we are ready to undergo an intensive training program (up to ATP and eventually higher)."
- He sent 50-60 similar e-mails to other flight training schools in the United States.[1]

2001
- Mid-August - Three weeks before September 11, targets were assigned to the four hijack teams.[2] The hijackers moved swiftly after that, selecting flights and choosing ones involving large planes with "maximum volume of fuel and best punctuality."[2] Binalshibh explained that business class were chosen for some to allow for "mobility and maneuverability."[2]
- August 16 - Atta rented an aircraft at Palm Beach Flight Training with instructor, in Lantana, Florida.[3]
- August 16 - Al-Shehhi rents room 111 at the Lisa 1 Motel in Lake Worth, Florida.[4]
- August 17 - Atta rented an aircraft at Palm Beach Flight Training.[3]
- August 19 - Atta rented an Archer aircraft at Palm Beach Flight Training.[3]
- August 19 - Al-Shehhi checks out of the Lisa 1 Motel.[4]
- August 22 - Atta purchased a one-way ticket from Fort Lauderdale to Newark on Spirit Airlines Flight 460, for travel on 8/23/2001. He paid cash at Fort Lauderdale Airport.[3]
- August 23 - Atta flew on Spirit Airlines Flight 460 from Fort Lauderdale to Newark.[3]
- August 26 - Atta booked a reservation using Travelocity for US Air Flight 2970 from BWI to Miami.[3]
- August 26 - Al-Shehhi checked into room 12 of the Panther Motel & Apartments in Deerfield Beach, Florida.[4]
- August 28 - Atta booked reservations on American Airlines Flight 11 for himself and al-Omari using the airline's website.[3]
- August 28 - Atta flew on US Air Flight 2970 from BWI to Fort Lauderdale.[3]
- August 28 - Al-Shehhi bought his ticket for United Airlines Flight 175 at Miami International Airport.[4]
- August 30 - A Leatherman utility tool/knife was purchased at Lowe's using Atta and al-Shehhi's credit card.[3]
- September 3 - Al-Shehhi purchases a toggle switch, gelmate, auto tape, and a 9-volt battery from WalMart in Pompano Beach, Florida.[4]
- September 5 - Al-Shehhi and Atta paid cash at Alvatour Travel Service for Mohand al-Shehri and Banihammad's flight from Fort Lauderdale to Boston on AirTran Flight 188/284 for September 8.[3]
- September 5 - Atta and al-Shehhi paid cash for airline tickets at Costamar Travel. Atta was booked on US Air Flight 2698 one-way on September 7, from Fort Lauderdale to Boston. Al-Shehhi booked a reservation on Delta Airlines Flight 2462 one-way on September 9, to Boston.[3]

- September 8 - Atta's Travelocity account was used to make a reservation on US Air Flight 2979 from BWI to Boston on September 9.[3]
- September 8 - Atta wired $5000 to the UAE from a Giant grocery store in Laurel, Maryland, using Western Union, and another $2860 was wired from a Safeway store to the UAE.[3]
