Somerset County

March 27

Just got a new digital SLR camera yesterday (March 26) while in NYC. It is way superior to the point and shoot I have been using. On my way to Pittsburgh, got off the PA Turnpike in Bedford and took the Lincoln Highway (Route 30) through Somerset County. Here are a few shots with the new camera:

Mt. Ararat lookout

From Bedford, the highway crosses over a ridge at the Mt. Ararat lookout point.

Bald Knob

A short distance later, one crosses Bald Knob Summit at nearly 3000 feet. Interestingly, this is where one finds a cell tower and other equipment. Bald Knob Summit is no more than 10 miles from the Flight 93 crash site. Two cell phone calls were made from Flight 93, one from flight attendant CeeCee Lyles and the other from passenger, Ed Felt. Both calls occurred at 9:58 a.m., when the aircraft dropped elevation to ~5000 feet. This means the aircraft may have only been ~2000 feet above the surface, when the calls were placed.

Near Shanksville

A little further, another smaller ridge and another cell tower. This one is 3-4 miles from the Flight 93 crash site.

April 3

On my return trip home, I passed through Westmoreland and Somerset Counties on Route 30.

Laurel Hill summit

Heading east from Greensburg and through Latrobe (home of Rolling Rock) on Route 30, one makes a steep ascent up to Laurel Hill summit, which marks the border between Westmoreland and Somerset County. There is a small state park, Laurel Ridge State Park, located at the summit, which is home to the now closed Laurel Mountain ski area.

Jennerstown

Jennerstown is located a few miles east of Laurel Hill Summit, towards Shanksville.

Mount Davis

Mt. Davis is located 23 miles to the southwest of the crash site in Somerset County. Mt. Davis, with an elevation of 3,213 ft, is the highest point in the state of Pennsylvania.
