This site serves as a general information resource about the 9/11 attacks, as well as addressing various myths and theories about the attacks.

About the site

During 2006, 9/11 conspiracy theories gained a following, with theories ranging from belief that the U.S. government knew about 9/11 in advance and chose not to act and prevent it, to theories that the U.S. government actually orchestrated the murder of nearly 3,000 at the World Trade Center, Pentagon, and rural Pennsylvania. These theories take every irregularity, and cherry-picked quotes, putting them together to form an “alternative” version of events. These theories have been propagated on numerous websites and blogs, which were particularly prominent on Google searches back in 2006. This website takes on these theories, sorting fact from fiction, as well as provides good quality general information about the attacks.

The founder ("Debunk911") of the site lives in the Washington, D.C. area, close to the Pentagon, and has spent quite a bit of time in New York City. One Saturday in the summer of 2006, ″Debunk911″ encountered 9/11 truthers outside the WTC PATH station, with signs, banners and handing out fliers to passerbys. We are all for free speech, but the idea of the truthers bringing the ″truth″ to Ground Zero, or at least their theories not being challenged, goes a bit too far. With that, the idea of creating a website came about to dispel myths put forth by 9/11 "truthers".

The site and its authors have no political agenda, and do not endorse or support the George W. Bush administration, nor other any other political parties. Sources are provided for material compiled on the site, to allow veracity of information to be checked by readers. In addition to addressing theories and myths, this site is intended to be a general educational resources about the 9/11 attacks.

The founder of the site has also edited 9/11 pages on Wikipedia, getting the articles there to Featured article quality. That's the level of quality (or better) that this site is aiming for, but it's all a work in progress. This site builds upon work done over at Wikipedia, with more details here than what's possible or suitable for Wikipedia.

Acknowledgements

Others have done excellent work in addressing conspiracy theories, including Mark Roberts ("Gravy") who wrote the Loose Change Guide, Mike Williams who runs 911myths.com, Pat and James B. (authors of the Screw Loose Change blog), the authors of Debunking911.com, the editors of Popular Mechanics who wrote "Debunking The 9/11 Myths - Mar. 2005 Cover Story", members of the JREF forums, "RealityBites" and Abby Scott (creator of 911 Conspiracy Wars - "The Movie") who joined Gravy at Ground Zero during the summer to counter the "truthers", and countless others. Through the collective effort of many to address the theories and inform the public, the popularity of 9/11 conspiracy theories has waned substantially since 2006.
