Sunday, October 22nd, 2006

Jones is retiring from his post as Professor of Physics at Brigham Young University, effective Jan 1. He has been on leave since early in September, over concerns that his “research” and “papers” were not being peer reviewed and other issues.

BYU places Steven E. Jones on paid leave

Friday, September 8th, 2006

Deseret News reports that BYU has placed ‘9/11 truth’ professor on paid leave.

Brigham Young University officials will be reviewing his involvement in the so-called “9/11 truth movement”. This semester, Jones was to teach two classes, including Physics 121: Principles of Physics 1.[1], which will now be taught by other instructors.

BYU issued a statement:

“BYU has repeatedly said that it does not endorse assertions made by individual faculty,” the statement said. “We are, however, concerned about the increasingly speculative and accusatory nature of these statements by Dr. Jones…BYU remains concerned that Dr. Jones’ work on this topic has not been published in appropriate scientific venues…It is a concern when faculty bring the university name into their own personal matters of concern”

The article goes on to say:

“Last fall, BYU faculty posted statements on the university Web site that questioned whether Jones subjected the paper to rigorous academic peer review before he posted it at physics.byu.edu. Jones removed the paper from BYU’s Web site Thursday at the university’s request.”

ImplosionWorld issues some clarifications, paper available at new link

Thursday, September 7th, 2006

ImplosionWorld has issued some clarifications and now their paper is available at a new link:

  • Steven E. Jones apparently does not have a doctorate degree, so Implosion World changed the text to refer to him as “Professor Jones”
  • They also clarify what they mean by “pancaking” - don’t take the term too literally! The term is meant as a general visual description to help readers understand the more advanced concepts.
  • ImplosionWorld also updates about their portable seismographs, saying that because these are far less technologically advanded, they can’t be taken on their own as evidence. To supplement this, they refer to Columbia University seismograph readings, which they interpret “clearly indicate explosives were not used”.

Update: 9/20/2006

New link for ImplosionWorld paper:

Sources confirm that Steven E. Jones indeed earned a Ph.D. from Vanderbilt in 1978.
